“Rise Abovid”
2020 | black porcelain, whipping twine, steel wire, cloves, enamel | 92” x 74” x 2.5”
I created this work as a reaction to the COVID 19 virus pandemic. In the first weeks of shelter in place, I searched the internet to see what artists were doing. The first on the scene were graffiti artists from around the globe because they didn’t need any official indoor venues to display their work. I was astonished and inspired by all the positive messaging that was out there. The graffiti lettering styles are referenced in random tile shapes of the hundreds of thin black porcelain tiles that I decided to weave into the form of the phoenix. The mythological phoenix bird has long been associated with transformation, endurance, and perseverance. Making this piece during the Stay in Place order gave me the hope that someday we will survive (rise above) this catastrophic event.
“Covid’s Rerise”
2021 | black porcelain, whipping twine, steel wire, cloves, enamel | 40” x 36” x 2”
This piece I created as a reaction to the second wave of the COVID 19 virus pandemic that occurred during the fall, 2020
“Twenty-twenty”
2021 | ceramic, underglaze pencil, glaze | 14” x 20” x 1”
This work was inspired by several published online articles that featured words and phrases sent in by readers that best sum up the pandemic of 2020. Researching several blogs, I carefully chose the words and phrases most revealing of our range of experiences. The comments are scribed on the ceramic form that is symbolic of our collective state of lockdown.
